Ten Things: Only in the country…

Kernut the Blond Posted on October 7, 2013 by KernutOctober 7, 2013
Ok, so it's not a tractor, but you see a lot of cow butt on the road, too.

For those of you who are new here, or those of you with a memory like mine, I have a treat for you. Allow me to present: Ten Things Tuesday on a day that may or may not be a Tuesday.

This living in the country is new to me. I lived in a suburbian ecosystem for many years. That’s not to say I lived an overly sheltered life, but those are stories for another day, many of which have already been published on this blog. Ahem.

But, wait! There's more...

Two heads are better than one shrunken head. Possibly.

Kernut the Blond Posted on September 28, 2013 by KernutNovember 2, 2013
Goat born with two heads and four eyes.

It’s All In Your Shrunken Head

It would seem the Ingram-Bandera area has a thing for heads. Today I bring you a two-headed goat, and a couple shrunken heads, one of which is human. (If you’re squeamish you might want to read something else, like Cat-butt-tongue water or watch the bull castration video I made on a Texas ranch. On second thought, if you’re squeamish you probably stopped reading this blog a long time ago. Ok, never mind.)

But, wait! There's more...

Beaver + Wood = Love

Kernut the Blond Posted on June 15, 2013 by KernutJune 23, 2013
Big beavers like big wood.

That nice cowboy who took me to see bulls being castrated, and ride in a hay bailing tractor got me hooked on Duck Dynasty. Yeah, he’s a real romantic. But have you seen Duck Dynasty?? It’s the best reality show on TV. WAIT! Don’t go! I’m sorry I used a … But, wait! There’s more…

The smell of money is a lot like methane, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide.

Kernut the Blond Posted on March 17, 2013 by KernutMarch 19, 2013

The smell of money stinks. No, really. Money smells like shit. Literally, like shit. Cow shit, chicken shit, and the gasses produced by drilling for oil all smell horrid and are toxic if inhaled for too long. But methane (cow), ammonia (chicken), and hydrogen sulfide (oil drilling) are the smell … But, wait! There’s more…

The Yankee in Texas Cow Country. Part 2.

Kernut the Blond Posted on December 1, 2012 by KernutDecember 1, 2012
Cowboy buns. Uh, I mean cowboys working hard, unjamming the baler.

As promised in the previous post, this is about the softer side of ranch life and farming. In the video below I got to ride in a tractor pulling a hay rake, and watch a baler make huge round bales, all while watching cowboys sweat. Coolest. Thing. Ever. (Follow this … But, wait! There’s more…

Who invited the Yankee to Texas Cow Country, anyhow? Part 1.

Kernut the Blond Posted on November 26, 2012 by KernutDecember 1, 2012
Calves waiting for shots, tagging, and...

I chronicled A Day In the Life of a Texas Cattle Rancher for all you out there in Reader Land so you could get a slice of what Texas ranch life is like, too. (Ok, bad pun. Sorry.)

It’s an honest, tough life, and a bit brutal at times. Ranchers make no apologies for supplying America with much of their meat in the manner which it’s been done for years. Nor should they.

BE FOREWARNED!! This video will make you cringe – at the very least. This is raw footage of a bull being castrated, given its shots, and an ear tag. (I’m sure to lose readers over this. If you’re new here, just know I’ve never posted anything like this before and don’t plan to make a habit of it.) This video is not for the squeamish or vegetarian or anyone who doesn’t want their “meat-grows-in-plastic-packages-on-trees-and-is-harvested-for-the-supermarket” view of food consumption to be challenged.

But, wait! There's more...

Because there are cows, well, EVERYWHERE. Even on boats at the park.

Kernut the Blond Posted on October 29, 2012 by KernutMay 28, 2015
That face makes me want to give up eating beef.

Yeah, this happens here. Welcome to Cow Country.

Remember when I told you all how the bovine population outnumbered the human population in this town by ten to one? Even knowing that I was still amazed (and rather delighted) to see this little brown calf arrive at the park on a boat.

Industry in the middle of the country.

Kernut the Blond Posted on October 26, 2012 by KernutNovember 5, 2012
A tree/bead sculpture at the koi pond.

In the middle of nowhere, just outside of Columbus, Texas, you’ll find a huge general store full of the not-so-general. And a lot of “recycled” (aka “garbage”) art. Started in 2006, the Industrial Country Market, and its many structures, are all self-sustaining and fully “off-grid”. Wandering around the large grounds, … But, wait! There’s more…

I found Cinderella’s Coach, now I just need the Prince.

Cinderella's Coach in La Grange, Texas

There it was, Cinderella’s Coach. It was sitting just off the highway in La Grange, Texas, the town most notable for the ZZ Top song of the same name. Now all I need is to find my glass slipper and that illusive Prince. Buy custom products at Kernut’s Zazzle store … But, wait! There’s more…

The tale of the Rattlesnake Tail and why I’m now a Texan

Kernut the Blond Posted on October 14, 2012 by KernutNovember 5, 2012
rattlesnake tail

(*hat tip* to Bluz Dude at Darwinfish 2 for the title idea) The Tale of the Tail I’ve been creating a tree nursery for the park by germinating such things as Pomegranates, Wisteria, Jacaranda, Cheesewood, and Giant Sequoias. (Heh, I don’t pick the seeds, they were already here just collecting … But, wait! There’s more…
