Taking a bite out of The Big Apple
My first time as a tourist in The Big Apple was amazing: Times Square, NY-style pizza, Top of The Rock, Central Park, and The Met! It was another business trip on which I followed Jeff but, but unlike Minnesota, it was warm and we had a blast! (In case anyone is wondering or even paying attention to my dear neglected blog, I’m still behind on my posts, so this one was just over two years ago, a little over a year before Jeff passed. Currently, I’m still enjoying the FL/AL gulf coast for the winter.)
We stayed in a hotel on Times Square – and it was there that I finally understood why they call it “the city that never sleeps”. No matter the time of day or night I looked out the high-rise window, the bright lights illuminated throngs of people mingling around the Square: people walking to and from some unknown location, street performers, people sitting on concrete planter walls or leaning against building walls, city maintenance workers and street cleaners. One thing I expected to see but did not was hookers and drug dealers. (Clearly, I watch too much TV.)
Many Bucket List items were crossed off on this trip, not the least of which was to have NY-style pizza in New York. I took the proverbial (and literal) bite out of the Big Apple…
It was great, but I have to say it was not as excellent as Pizza My Heart in the village in Capitola, CA. That remains my favorite pizza place in the U.S. I lived in Capitola at the time the first PMH opened. (Hey, I’m not that old – I wasn’t even old enough to drive when they opened, so there.) They have only take-out, which you walk to the nearby seats in front of the ocean, where seagulls eagerly sit immediately across from you, staring at you and your tasty meal as you gorge your face while they anticipate the inevitable guilt you will feel as their beady little eyes silently implore you to share, and then vie for scraps of the crust you will undoubtedly throw if only to appease your guilt and to momentarily divert their eyes. It’s an awesome experience, and one not to be missed. (As a side note, I have yet to find pizza in the south that resembles anything approaching “great”. At best, one place has only “decent” pizza, and hardly worth noting on this ever so popular blog. Ahem.)
But, I digress. As usual.
The Top of The Rock
The view was amazing, the crowd was a pain in the ass with everyone pushy for a spot near the edge in order to take a selfie. Again, when in Rome…
And now a slide show from The Top of The Rock…
Coming up next is Central Park and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (“The Met”).
Hi Kernut
Ey have enjoyed your posts for years and look forward to the next one no matter when it comes. Glad you are doing well.
Celebrating my fifth year on the road in my truck and camper, a Fox on a Ford, holed up for the winter in Arizona. Heading somewhere in the spring.

You are right, Pizza My Heart is the best. My favorite is the Big Sur. I have one every time I get back to Los Gatos.
Amazing trip. Boston is incredible as well. #GoRedsox

I miss PMH! Wish they would branch out to the FL/AL gulf coast – they are in serious need of good pizza in this area!
