Bamahenge, Alabama’s answer to Stonehenge.
Ah, how I love fake Stonehenges. You may recall my visit to Stonehenge II in Ingram, Texas.
The town of Elberta, Alabama, not one to be left out of the Stonehenge fun, proudly displays a 1/3-scale fiberglass Stonehenge. Lovingly named “Bamahenge”, it is one of the coolest tourist attractions in Baldwin County.
According to RoadsideAmerica.com, Bamahenge was created by Mark Cline at the request of Alabama billionaire George Barber. Mr. Barber has several wonderful goofy roadside attractions on this massive property. I can’t help but think anyone who commissions a Stonehenge replica and covers his property with goofy roadside attractions must be a pretty interesting person. I’d like to meet him someday.
To visit Bamahenge, from highway 98 head south on Barber Marina Parkway. Bamahenge will be in the middle of the woods on your right. It’s free and open to the public. Park off the road, and walk in.
After you post your Bamahenge selfies, keep heading south and be on the lookout for dinosaurs and knights. But don’t turn around there or you’ll miss the Lady in the Lake.
Alabama. Love the gulf shores.
It is one of my favorite areas!
