World’s Largest Strawberry Tart
Hi, remember me? It’s only been a couple weeks since I blogged, but it seems like forever to me. So, I’m blogging instead of doing my laundry or cleaning my house.
Wondering what I’ve been up to, besides living in filth? I’ve been sightseeing the last couple weekends (I saw some historical stuff, and a beautiful park), had a guest stay for almost a week, and then attended a formal event for the newspaper.
Meanwhile, I confirmed that my Yahoo editor has moved on to bigger and better things. I sure do miss her. After several months, it seems they are still unable to replace her. This means my articles sit in the cue, unpublished. *sigh* So, I’m looking for other freelance writing opportunities. (Please let me know if you’ve had success with any platforms.)
Now that you’re all caught up, I promise a few travel posts and a Pye update are coming soon. To hold you over, I bribe you with pie. No, not furry Pye, but a fresh strawberry tart, one of my most favorite desserts.
World’s Largest Strawberry Tart
When I visited Chickenbone and family in November, we hit up my favorite cafe, Gayle’s Bakery in Capitola, California. Best. Fresh Fruit. Tarts. Ever.
What you see is a picture of my tart (careful, my mom reads this blog) in the foreground, and their big, glass mosaic tart sculpture in the background.
(At the time of this writing, I had not heard back from the restaurant about the artist or details on the big strawberry tart. I will update this when I hear back. Now I’m hungry, and must start a good bakery in Cow-Chicken-Oil town if I want fresh fruit tarts out here.)
UPDATE: The artist’s name is Terry Kvenild. Gayle O., the owner of Gayle’s Bakery, wrote back with this interesting trivia:
The art was installed 3 years ago when we opened the covered patio. It’s about 3’ in diameter and around 7” high. It was quite a feat getting it up there! In fact, it was dropped while installing it and some of the mosaic pieces had to be repaired. But it’s good as new now.
Editor’s note: I think is more than 7″ tall. The berries alone appear to be that tall. So, with that, I proclaim this the World’s Largest Strawberry Tart.
Maybe you need to apply for the Yahoo editor’s job!
That’s not a bad idea, Magee!
