Oddities in Rockport, Texas
Here are a few of the weird, wacky, and wonderful oddities found in and around Rockport, Texas.
A Big Tree? So big it gets a sign of it’s own? This is Texas – the tree must be really big!
Huh. Somehow I thought it would be bigger. (That’s what she said.)
Maybe it’s the angle? (That’s what he said.) Let’s try another view… (Baby, get closer to it…)
Nope, it’s not the angle. I mean, yes it is a ‘big tree’, but worthy of a sign and a fence? I don’t know.
Maybe it’s because I lived in northern California for thirty years – where the trees are REALLY big. That may be the only big thing California has, but they have a lot of ’em. The massive trees don’t get signs, they get entire parks. And I’m not talking about just the redwoods being big – the oaks are huge, too. I used to live in a house with a massive oak tree in the back yard. It was bigger than the one above – at least double the height and trunk width.
Ok, so maybe this is the biggest tree in the area because of all the storms. They do lose a few with each big wind. Those that survive grow sideways. True story.
Bent Trees in Rockport-Fulton
This isn’t the best photo of the many bent trees, but it’s the biggest grouping I could find. No, it was not very windy that day – the trees are bent. These are facing away from the coast line which is just across the road where this photo was taken.
World’s Longest Fishing Pier?
The Rockport Chamber of Commerce calls this, the Copano Causeway Pier, the World’s Longest Fishing Pier. I could not verify this, but I’m posting it anyway.
It was once the old causeway. In 1967 they built a new one, and cut a channel for boats in the middle of the old one, now the two-part Copano Bay Fishing Pier. The south side is 2,500 feet long, and the north side is 6,190 feet long. Question: Can is still be called a single pier if it’s cut in two?
Beware of the Alligator
You might want to watch out for that dock, too. They used to have a few alligators at the RV park I stayed in, but they left during the drought and haven’t been seen since. Bummer. The only one I saw was when I went to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.
He’s little but he’s cute. (That’s what… oh, never mind.)
A daily sighting in Rockport…
Maybe they should have just called it “Old Tree.”
Along the lines of the TX bent trees, I’m sure you’ve seen the ones near the beaches in Carmel and Monteray. With their branches all grown in the “blown back” position, they look like they should be in a Tim Burton movie.
Love the geckos. My parents back yard (in FL) is lousy with them.
I have seen the ones along the Carmel and Monterey coast line. I don’t remember them looking like that, though. I’ll be back that way in a few weeks and will check it out.
Geckos are so cute!! The little green ones with the pink throat were funny. They’d walk about a foot or two along the railing, stop, puff out their pink throat a few times, then continue on and repeat the process.
