Loopiness in Luling, Texas

It’s a nice little town and all, so why do some people say Luling, Texas is “loopy”?

Maybe it’s because of the Watermelon Thump festival where the person who can spit a watermelon seed the farthest wins. Wins what, I don’t know. Sadly, I missed this festival.

It could also be the watermelon water tower or the crashed airplane advertising skydiving. It’s probably not because of the nice park. But rather than attempt to describe any loopiness, it’s times like these when a picture really is worth a thousand words. You be the judge of the loopiness.

Let’s start with the watermelon water tower…

But really, if you could paint your water tower like a watermelon, wouldn’t you?

As I mentioned earlier, there is a park. The park isn’t wacky. It’s home to the old Zedler Mill, some interesting old buildings, and the entrance to a paddling trail on the San Marcos River.

See? It’s a very nice park. The oddest thing about it are my captions. (My apologies for the duplicate photos of the watermelon water tower and the crashed airplane in the photo gallery – neither of which are in the park, but I can’t figure out how to show only the ones I want in the photo gallery without having to load the page with full-sized photos.)

Even though this next item is not quite in Luling, I suspect this may be another reason Luling, Texas is considered “loopy” by some…

One can not match the loopy marketing awesomeness that is this: A skydiving school that advertises with a crashed airplane.

I can not make this stuff up, people.

It’s extremely noticeable as far as ads go. But were I ever to consider such a thing as skydiving, I’d have conflicted emotions about choosing them. Why? The plane appears to be one of theirs. (Note their phone number on the side.)

  2. First I NEVER heard Luling called “loopy” and I’ve lived in the county always.
    Second the airplane is NOT in Luling. It’s in Fentress which is a wonderful little town with a wonderful history.
    Third…what about the pumpjacks? Most people LOVE our pumpjacks. They’ve been on tv and are famous.

    • First, I’ve been told on many occasions there is a running rivalry with a neighboring town, and those residents are ALWAYS referring to people from Luling as being very odd.

      Second, if you read it again, you will notice I mentioned in the post that the airplane was ‘not quite in Luling…’.

      Third, the pumpjacks were not on my route that day. However, I have since seen them, but they seem to have lost their paint jobs making them barely recognizable as the characters they were once painted to be. Perhaps if you look at them again, with a fresh eye, you will see they are not what they once must have been and wouldn’t translate well to a photograph on the web. Considering most towns have them, I found these to be among the least interesting things in Luling.
